Brazil's Pantanal is the best place in the world to photograph wild jaguars. For photographers, it delivers something almost unheard of with big cats: reliable, unobstructed sightings.
Timing is critical. The dry season, from roughly June to October, is the prime window. As waters recede, jaguars concentrate along the shrinking rivers to hunt caiman and capybara, and boat access improves dramatically. July through September is widely considered the peak for sightings and riverbank action.
Most jaguar photography here happens from boats, which changes your technique. A monopod or handheld stabilisation beats a tripod on a moving vessel, and a shutter speed of 1/1000s or faster counters both animal movement and boat motion.
